Roster 2017



Abigail Winters Right Forward:
Abby is in her 1st year of university in the science program and first year on the team. Abby started playing field hockey in high school in Moncton, New Brunswick. Abby is hard worker who is always willing to put in the effort to improve.







Danielle Dempsey 5'5'' (#13) Centre Midfield
Danielle is in the fourth year of a PhD in the Department of Engineering Mathematics. She also did her undergraduate at Dal and this is her 8th year on the team. Danielle uses her experience to control the midfield, distributing the ball and creating space.







Deanna Kimber 5'5" (#7) Left Defence: 
Deanna is a third year student in the Medical Sciences program. Her hometown is Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.  This is her third year playing field hockey for Dalhousie, but first started playing the sport when she was in grade 7. Deanna is always ready to channel someone down the left side of the field and prevent people from getting a good scoring opportunity. She is always ready to help out her teammates on and off the field. Deanna has also taken on the position of Vice-President of the DAL FH Club.
Ellery Platts 5’4” (#2) Left Wing: 
Ellery is a second year student in the Bachelor of Journalism Honours program at the University of King’s College. This is her second year on the Dalhousie Field Hockey team. She began to play in seventh grade in Calgary, Alberta, and fell in love with the sport. Ellery is confident on the left and is always at the post for a tip.











Ellie McGowan 5'4" (#11) Left forward:
Ellie transferred to Dalhousie after her second year at Clarkson University and it is her first year on the field hockey team. However, she is continuing her degree in Electrical Engineering so she will be back for 2 more seasons! Ellie started to play field hockey when she was 7 back home in Stony Point, New York and fell in love with the sport.





Emma Churchill 5'3" Goalie: 
Emma is in her fourth year of university and first year on the field hockey team. She started playing in junior high and continued throughout high school and decided to come back this year for her final year. Emma says that is has been a great experience being able to play for Dalhousie and that she has learned a lot from her fellow teammates.

Erin Ring 5'1" (#3) Right Forward:
Erin is in her fifth year of University and fifth year on the field hockey team. However, she began the Pharmacy program in 2016 so she will be back for 1 more seasons! Erin started to play field hockey in high school here in Halifax, Nova Scotia and fell in love with the sport. Erin is always up for a challenge and is always willing to put in the hard work to improve.








Erin Spooner 5'3" (#18) Midfield/ Defence:
Erin is in her first year in the General Sciences Program at Dalhousie University. She has traveled all the way from the west coast to come and join the field hockey team here at Dal. After 4 years of her sister saying only good things about the team, she decided to follow her sister's footsteps go to Dal and play with her for her last year.  
Hailey Zwicker 5'1" (#4) Forward/ Midfield:
 Hailey is a third year Bsc. Neuroscience student at Dalhousie. This is her second year playing for the Dalhousie Field Hockey team. She first started playing field hockey in grade six in her hometown of Calgary, Alberta. On the field, Hailey is always ready to run and provide support both for offensive plays and defence. Hailey always has a smile on her face and is ready to improve and learn from her teammates and coaches.  She is the DAL Field Hockey Club Treasurer.

Jenny Lee 5'5" (#12) Forward/ Midfield
Jenny is a second year Sociology student from Ottawa, Ontario. She is planning on majoring in sociology and would like to possibly pursue a career in teaching. She has played field hockey since she was in grade 8 and comes from a family of hockey players. As well as field hockey during high school she ran track and swam. Jenny was Dal's AUWFHL Rookie nominee for 2016.




Julia Ekvall 5'5" (#5) Right Midfield
Julia is a third year student taking a bachelor of environmental science at Dalhousie University. This is her second year playing on a university sports team. She began playing hockey in Calgary on a recreational team and later played for her high school team. Julia makes quick passes up the sidelines and supports her team mates. Julia is dedicated and always puts in her all. For the second year, Julia is the Co-President of the DAL FH Club.





Kathleen Bergin 5'8" (#8) Midfield: 
Kathleen is in her second year of Medical Sciences at Dalhousie. This is her second year playing field hockey for Dal. Kathleen learned to play field hockey in Jr. High from her gym teacher in Prince Edward Island. Kathleen is a hard-working, dedicated player who always tries her best. She looks forward to representing Dalhousie this year and in the future as well. 







Kerry Costello 5'7" (#6) Midfield/Defense
Kerry is in her fifth year of the PhD program in Biomedical Engineering at Dalhousie. She began playing field hockey in grade four in her hometown of Havertown, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia.  She returned to the sport after a 9-year break during which she played lacrosse as an undergraduate at Duke University, spent a year on a scholarship in the Netherlands, completed her masters degree at Virginia Tech, did a year of research in Vail, Colorado, and worked as a valet before moving to Nova Scotia.  Kerry’s aggressiveness and sense of positioning on the field due to her many years of experience in competitive sports make her a tough defender and a valuable contributor to the Dal defensive and midfield lines.

Maureen Parker 5'5" (#9) Midfield/Defense: 
Mo, is in her fifth year of a Science degree at Dalhousie. She played five years for her high school team in Vancouver, BC and also played for 9 years for the local spring league. Over the past five years, the Tigers have depended upon her high-quality offensive and defensive flexibility to be a strong force in the team’s mid-field.  Her favourite past times consist of maxing as well as relaxing. For the second year, Mo is the Co-President of the DAL FH Club. 






Maya Palacio 5'5" (#10) Centre Forward/ Centre Midfield:   
Maya is taking the Foundation Year Program- journalism as a third year student at the University of Kings College. This is her second year playing for Dalhousie. Maya was the AUWFH League Rookie & All-Star 2015. She has been playing field hockey in Bermuda since she was 10 years old. She was captain of her club team for 7 years and a member of the Bermuda National Squad Team for 2 years. Maya has good ball movement that contributes to the midfield triangle. During her free time, Maya likes to watch any all types of sporting events.  She aspires to become a sports journalist. Maya has been the DAL Field Hockey Club Fundraiser co-ordinator for three years.





McKenna Llewellyn 5'7" (#12) Midfield: 
McKenna is in her first year at Dalhousie in the Health Promotion program. She is from Vancouver, BC and participates in many sports such as hockey, soccer, field hockey, and cross country. McKenna loves being outdoors and misses her dogs.





Megan Suitor (#30) Goalie: 
Megan is a fourth year Neuroscience student at Dalhousie University.   She played field hockey at Merivale High School and Outaouais Field Hockey Club in Ottawa for four years. As a rookie goaltender for Dal, she quickly demonstrated her high level of speed, skill and dexterity. Her ability to read the play, react to tips and deflections and stop big hits make her a valuable asset to the team. Through her solid skills during the first tournament she was the coaches choice to play the more crucial games in the second tournament. Megan is confident, has a positive attitude and easy to coach.  Her addition to the team will bode well for the team’s future.  








Melizza Clayden 5'2" Forward: 
Right Forward: Melizza is in her first year of University gaining a rookie spot on the squad. She is taking a bachelor of science planning to major in Chemistry. Melizza started playing field hockey when she was in Grade 8 playing for her school team near Parry Sound, Ontario. Ever since then she developed a passion and love for the sport that will never curl.


Nina Garrett 5'3" (#15) Left Back:
Nina is in her first year of University and is a rookie on the field hockey team. She is currently in the general science program with hope of transferring to Architecture. Nina first played field hockey in high school, in her home city Calgary, Alberta and has been playing ever since. She is very happy to on the Dal team and hopes to be able to be apart of the field hockey family in the years to come. Nina loves learning new things and is very determined when it comes to getting something right.



Sam Spooner (#14) Sweep:
Sam is in her fifth year of a Bachelor of Arts program at Dalhousie.  She has been an AUWFH League All-Star 2016 - 2013  and the CIS & Atlantic League Rookie of the year in 2013.  Sam’s experience as a player in West Vancouver where she played for her high school team, the West Vancouver Field Hockey Club, the Vancouver Women's Field Hockey League and the BC Provincial Field Hockey Program continues to allow her to be an integral asset to the Dal team. She is rock-solid in her position of sweep, utilizing much confidence and composure.
